How to write a good incident update

  • Lead with impact. Customers care what’s broken, not what’s wrong internally.
  • Timestamp everything. Readers always want to know when things started and when they’ll hear from you next.
  • Be honest about uncertainty. “We’re still investigating” is better than silence or speculation.
  • Close the loop. Always post a final “resolved” update, even for small incidents.
